[ARCHIVED] Halloween Safety Tips

Jack O'Lantern with the words The Bixby Fire Department wished you a safe and happy halloween!

The Bixby Fire Department hopes everyone that participates has a safe Halloween so here are some tips we wish to pass long to make sure that happens. Make sure costumes fit properly.

  • Make sure mask eye holes are large enough so he or she can see out.
  • Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers.
  • Provide children with flashlights or glow sticks as part of their costume.
  • Young children should always be with an adult.
  • Trick-or-treat in groups.
  • Closely inspect all candy before allowing children to eat it. If in doubt, throw it out.
  • Keep all decorations away from open flames and other heat sources like light bulbs and heaters.
  • Use caution when using real candles to light your Jack-o-lanterns.
  • Be sure to place lit pumpkins well away from anything that can burn and far enough out of the way of trick-or-treaters, doorsteps, walkways and yards.
  • Remember to keep exits clear of decorations, so nothing blocks escape routes.
  • Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighborhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.
