E.M.S. Chief Joe Sherrell presented Newly Certified Paramedic Mitchell Moore with a specially engraved stethoscope during a ceremony at the Bixby City Hall. Chief Sherrell read the following during the ceremony.
Stethoscope Presentation
The stethoscope is the paramedic's most iconic assessment instrument. The stethoscope was invented in 1816 and has represented the medical profession for centuries. When worn around the neck, it symbolizes confidence and assurance. The stethoscope represents knowledge and empathy. The stethoscope signifies the personal, physical, and spiritual connection with your patient.
As a paramedic, you are summoned to the homes of strangers. You will be invited into the most intimate events experienced by your patients and their families. You will wipe away tears of sorrow and celebrate tears of joy. You will assist mothers in bringing new life into this world, and you will witness the last breaths others.
You are charged to serve as the patient’s advocate above all else. You will respond to calls that seem mundane and unworthy of your response. You will experience individuals that are unappreciative of your service. You will be required to hold your tongue and force a smile at times. During these times, remember what the stethoscope represents and the fraternity's standards to which you now belong.
Firefighter Mitchell Drew Moore, you are the first paramedic to hit the streets of Bixby. You have a unique opportunity to set the standard of advanced prehospital care. Our other providers will be watching.
This responsibility cannot be taken lightly. Do not accept this burden alone. Establish a network of supporters and reach out to them when needed.
The Bixby Fire Department presents you with this stethoscope on April 29, 2022, as a symbol of acceptance into the profession and your responsibility to safeguard human life.
Congratulations on your achievement. You are making history!
Respectfully,
Joseph Sherrell, EMS Chief
